Through Bible mediation and 3 simple steps, we have the ability to defeat temptation of any sort – including pornography.

Meditate on scripture that describes the sin

Our first step in defeating the sin of pornography is to recite memorized scripture that forces us to acknowledge it for the sin it is. Remember, the thought of pornography isn’t a sin. It becomes sin when we allow the thought to drive our actions.

Sample verses to memorize and recite:

  • But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:28)
  • Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness. (Luke 11:34)
  • Run from sexual immorality! “Every sin a person can commit is outside the body.” On the contrary, the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18)

Meditate on scripture that describes God’s power

Now that we’ve acknowledged the potential sin that lies before us, we need to recite memorized scripture that describes God’s power to deliver us. Additionally, we might recite memorized scripture that describes God’s promises to us.

Sample verses to memorize and recite:

  • I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
  • No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
  • The Lord is the One who will go before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Meditate on scripture that describes Godly character

We’ve acknowledge the temptation and called upon God’s power to overcome, now we simply replace the thoughts of pornography with thoughts of Godly character. In our third and final step, we will adhere to Paul’s instructions from Philippians 4:8 – Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise — dwell on these things.

Sample verses to memorize and recite:

  • I know, my God, that You test the heart and that You are pleased with what is right. (1 Chronicles 29:17)
  • The one who loves a pure heart and gracious lips – the king is his friend. (Proverbs 22:11)
  • How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping Your word. (Psalm 119:9)

Bible meditation equips us with the scripture to defeat pornography and any other temptation in our lives. Meditation requires the effort and time to commit scripture recollection to muscle memory. Scripture that addresses our common temptations then come to mind naturally and quickly in order that we can utilize God’s power and see the “way of escape” (1 Corinthians 10:13) He has provided.
